How did the Atlantic charter influence South African nationalism?
The ANC had set up a committee to study the document and source out what its implications could be for Africa.
What happened with regards to the Atlantic Charter, in the ANC?
A document titled African Claims in South Africa was written up calling for votes for ALL adults, fair land distribution, the right for Africans to own land in urban areas and the end of discrimination within the work place.
What happened in 1943?
Younger members of the ANC formed the ANC Youth League and accused the ANC of representing the elite and being out of touch with the masses.
How were black South Africans treated in WW2?
They were drivers, orderlies, cooks, gaurds and stretcher bearers. They were never given arms. The government feared that training the black people would undermine the white domination in South Africa.
What did the service within the war teach black South Africans?
It highlighted the differences between the democracy they were fighting for and the oppression they faced at home. They thought aiding in the war effort would mean self determination and franchise for the black people; this was not true.
