What was the Manchester conference?

A

1945: The first Pan-Africanist conference, organized by Kwame Nkrumah and WEB du Bois, that was vaguely militant and wherein plans were finally put into place. Although it never promoted violence, it was a rather aggressive conference. It was the first time the idea of GAINING INDEPENDENCE BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY was discussed.

A

The cocoa strike went from a strike about bad pricing and British exploitation to a nationalist move,net against colonialism. After the success of a minimum wage, the mentality spread that nationalism can succeed in Africa.

Rural people were out of touch; coming to cities educated them and influenced them.

A

{many African men fought for the British in hopes of a better quality of life once the war was over}
The Africans were fighting for democracy yet they themselves had no experience with it. Ideas around democracy and freedom were so peeve land at is time it was hard for the African soldiers not to be influenced by it all.

How did documents drawn up after and during WW2 influence African nationalism?

A

The Atlantic charter stated, “All countries should have w right to rule themselves,” yet Africa didn’t. The Human Rights charter was full of things that shouldn’t be violated that the colonialists in Africa had indeed violated. When the colonies saw these charters not being applied to them, they asked questions.

A

People in the U.S. and Europe began to grow suspicious and un-happy about colonialism.

Why were the growing feelings after World War Two in Ghana?

A

There was a feeling of resentment over the lower cocoa prices and plant disease that meant many crops had to be cut down in Ghana. The end of the war meant a higher price for everything.
