How did the 1913 land act affect black South Africans?
- specific areas were set aside (reserves) for black people
- reserves were tiny and unsuitable for agriculture
- abolished share cropping and rental tenancy arrangements of black farmers in white rural areas
- many farmers were displaced, no way of making a living
- forced them onto the cheap labour market
- 1920/ 30-40% adult male population was working in cities
What is nationalism?
Nationalism is the idea that people who share common history , language, religion and tradition form a nation who should rule themselves. At the same time nationalists believe that loyalty to their nation and culture is if utmost importance.
How did Afrikaners treat black people during the anglo boer war?
- blAck people felt forced to participate
- forced to join as servants
- not allowed to carry guns
How did the British treat black people in the Angle/Boer War?
They recruited black people, instead of forcing them to join, and they paid them. Black people were also allowed to carry weapons. By the end of the war, there were 30 000 armed black MEN in the British army.
In 1903, the South African Natives Commission was set up. What did this mean and what is it?
It was, basically, the start of segregation in South Africa. There were reserves for blacks in rural areas and townships in urban areas. In some cases, there were segregated political structures i.e. village chiefs etc.
When was the APO (African Politcal/Peoples Organisation) started and by whom?
The APO was started by Abdullah Abdourahman in 1902. It was to protest against British segregation laws i.e. townships and reserves.
Why was the APO formed?
In the Western Cape, colored men had the franchise. They were worried this right would be taken away by the British and that segregation laws would be applied to the colourds. Therefore they formed the APO.
What did the APO want?
They wanted the colored franchise to extend to the whole Union so that they would have more power. They planned to do this by negation and a passive movement with no violence.
When was the colored franchise removed completely?
I. The year 1936. Only white men and married woman could vote.
What is the South African Native National Convention?
It was mostly black people, but some colored people. In the year 1909, it was founded by three newspaper editors. It was formed in response to segregation laws and their demands were vote for all MALES and racial segregation. They wine tot London to appeal but they didn’t succeed.
What is the Transvaal native congress?
In 1906 it appealed to the government about pass laws.

Basically, the unification of non-whites with whites. They wanted no discrimination and they wanted political rights for non-white people.
