Isotasy Flashcards
Explain the concept of Isotasy given by Arther Holmes
▪︎ Arther Holmes along with D.L. Holmes supported the views of airy is 1978 and agreed that the higher features of the earth’s surface are composed by the lighter materials and that their major portions lie buried in the heavier and denser rocks below to keep them in a state of hydrostatic balance.
▪︎ he also supported the root hypothesis of airy and stated that the exploration of the earth crust by the earthquake waves confirms that the roots of the mountains are completely made of sial and have a depth of 50-60km.
▪︎ in the coastal plains the thickenss if of the sial and other crustal rocks are 30km or less
▪︎ beneath large parts of the deep ocean floor, the sial is very thin and places it is totally absent.
