Isomers Flashcards
isomers
compounds with the same molecular formula but different arrangements of atoms in the molecule and so, different properties
structural isomers (constitutional isomers)
have the same number and type of atoms (same molecular formula) but a different structure (atoms joined differently
geometric isomers (cis-trans isomers)
can occur in molecules where a C=C double bond prevents any rotation about the bond. If each C of the C=C bond has two different groups or atoms attached, then two different arrangements are possible.
cis isomer
has the same groups on the same side of the C=C
trans isomer
has the same groups on opposite sides of C=C
when can cis-trans isomers occur
when there are two different groups or atoms attached to the C at each end of the double bond
