Haloalkanes and Alkynes Flashcards
Primary haloalkanes
-X is attached to a C bonded to 1 other C
secondary Haloalkanes
-X is attached to a C bonded to 2 other C’s
tertiary haloalkanes
-X is attached to a C bonded to 3 other C’s
how are C atoms numbered in a haloalkane
C atoms are numbered to give the smallest number to halogens and the halogen atom prefix’s are arranged alphabetically so Bromo is on the smaller number C than chloro
Substitution reactions of haloalkanes equation
haloalkane +KOH (aq) arrow alcohol
haloalkane + NH3 (alc) arrow amine
elimination reactions of Haloalkanes
the halogen atom and a hydrogen atom from an adjacent C atom is removed resulting in an alkene
elimination reaction of haloalkanes equation
haloalkane arrow (KOH (alc) alkene
saytzeff’s rule
determines which will be the major product. an H is removed from the adjacent C with the fewest attached H’s
properties of alkynes
similar physical properties to alkanes and alkenes and undergo addition reactions like alkenes
addition reactions with Alkynes
occur in 2 steps (from triple bond to double bond to single bond)
