What is logical disputing?
self defeating beliefs that are illogical from the information available
A therapist may ask a patient (does this way of thinking make sense?)
What is empirical disputing?
self defeating beliefs that are not consistent with reality. A therapist may ask for proof of these beliefs, they may ask a question such as the following ‘ where is the evidence that your beliefs are true?’
What is pragmatic disputing?
A therapist emphasises the uselessness of self-defeating beliefs
(how will these beliefs help me?)
What might happen after a session?
A therapist might set the patient homework so the patient can move on from irrational to rational beliefs
Homework leads to a patient identify their own rational beliefs
