What is deviation from ideal mental health
A
a definition of abnormality that states that abnormal behaviour should be defined by the absence of (ideal) particular characteristics, for example happiness.

What is failure to function adequately?
A
- a definition of abnormality where a person is considered as abnormal if they are unable to cope with the demands of everyday life, or experience personal distress.
For example, being content living in unwashed clothes.

What six things did Marie Johda believe would make an individual happy?

- self attitudes (high self esteem)
- personal growth and self - actualisation (extent to which an individual develops their full capabilities)
- integration (being able to cope with stressful situations)
- autonomy (being independent/self-regulating)
- having an accurate perception of reality
- mastery of the environment (ability to love,function at work, interpersonal relationships and adjusting to new situations)

- DSM has created an assessment ability to function called WHODAS
- considers 6 areas, for example :understanding/communication, self care/getting on with other people
