Antidepressants Flashcards
What is the most commonly used drug for OCD?
Antidepressants
why are antidepressants used?
Low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin are associated with depression as well as OCD so drugs increase serotonin levels in both mental disorders
Why else are antidepressants used for people with OCD?
They are used to reduce the anxiety associated with OCD
What is the preferred drug for anxiety
SSRI as they increase serotonin which regulates mood and anxiety
How do SSRI work?
Serotonin is released into a synapse from a neuron
It targets receptor cells on the receiving neuron at the receptor sites
afterwards it is reabsorbed by the initial neuron sending the message
The re-absorption is inhibited to increase levels of serotonin at the synapse
