WHAT IS AN IR FACTOR?
Are issued that has direct influence on International Dynamics, specially in the interaction between actors (state and NSA)
What are the factors of IR
- Geographic
- Economic
- Demographic
- Strategic
Geographic factors
- Location of a state, its climate and size
- Geographical position of a nation – principal conditioning factor
- If position is good, climate is healthy, rich in food and raw material – independent foreign policy
- Strategic natural barriers – seas, mountains, terrains, deserts
- Land and sea locked countries have their own foreign policies and limitations
- If they don’t have natural barriers they need to lock to the other countries and follow independent foreign policy.
- Country that has no favorable geographic position cannot keep itself isolated by the events of neighboring country.
Economic Factors
• Key- role in affecting the relations of the state with the rest of the world
• Two chief element, determine the position of a state in relations to others :
Self – sufficiency
Its capacity to provide food, clothing and shelter to its population
• A state can be agrarian or agricultural, but not have mineral resources and not be industrially advanced and also the opposite.
• Example : china
Demographic Factors
- As a factor : large population and efficient industrial production
- Nation as great : large population and efficient industrial production ( Russia, china , US)
- The relation between the size of the population can algo be a factor that contributes to the weakness of the country.
- Conflict : depending on the ethnic circumstances the country might face internal problems.
Strategic Factors
- Military strategies are an important factor – connected to the nations society
- Protective natural boundaries seldom worries about security (Britain and japan – Islands)
- Russia and Switzerland – among the most secure frontiers
- Countries isolated from disturbed areas fue to distance
- Important factor, even away from problematic spots : governing strategic problems.

Historical-Psychological, sociological factors
- If a country has a bold history in which people have the idea to sacrifice their blood for their country, its morale will be high
- We need to understand the past of a nation or country to understand its future
- To have an idependent foreign policy, the people morale needs to be high, there must be a stronger national character.
Organizational-administrative Factors
- Form of the government within a political society and the people’s attitudes towards it
- Some governmental organizations can decide the majority of the foreign issues
- People’s support to a government can make it last longer and be more efficient.
- To formulate a solid foreign policy, the combination of people’s support to a government and an efficient administration are important factors.
Military Factors
• Determines the foreign relations of a state
• This factor is considered from various aspects:
1. Size of armed forces
2. Quality and morale of the army
3. Quality and variety of weapons and equipment
