IOTA 5 Flashcards
What are the sections of the spinal cord?
5 sections:
Cervical cord :C1-C8 Thoracic cord: T1 -T12 Lumbar cord: L1-L5 Sacral cord: S1-S5 Coccygeal cord: 1
How many are the pairs of spinal nerves ?
31 pairs of spinal nerves
How do spinal nerves innervate?
IPSILATERAL part of the body: if you have a C7 on the right it will innervate the right arm(specifically hand)
IPSI: right goes with right
What is C1? Location?
It’s only motor
Only spinal cord nerve that has no sensory input
Location: in the skull , where nerves exit
Where do cervical nerves (C1-C8) exit from?
Th cervical nerves always exit above the bone at C1
Is there a bone at C8?
No
Bones of the spinal cord keep growing beyond the spinal cord nerves sections
True or false
What does that mean ?
True
Spinal cord L1- L5 is right next to T11-T12 bones
Spinal cord S1-S5 is right next to L1-L2
So nerves have to travel down to innervate their corrispondent sections
What is the Conus medullaris?
The end of the spinal cord: end of CNS
At the end of L2 bone (NOT SPINAL CORD)
What is the Cauda equina?
Spinal nerves of the peripheral nervous system from L2-L5
What happens when spinal nerves leave through vertebral bones?
They can fuse and intermingle to form plexuses
What are mixed nerves?
Sensory & motor nerves
What is the Cervical enlargement ?
Side of spinal cord is larger here : C5-T1
This is because you need more nerves to innervate the upper limbs
What is the Lumbosacral enlargement?
Between L1-S3
Need more neurons for innervation of lower limbs
