Ionophores Flashcards
Ionophores are classified as the “______ ____” by the FDA without any human use.
“antimicrobial drug”
Small amounts of ionophores can hurt the (species)
horse
____ are classified as abx by altering the microbial composition of the (body system)
Ionophores; GI tract
Ionophores uses:
- Better feed efficiency in cattle
- help control coccidia but will not tx
- Rumensin- used in feedlot to control acidosis and bloating
- improve energy or storage of fat or increased milk prod. in dairy cattle
Ionophore toxic syndrome, what is it?
Excessive ionophore conc. affecting host cells, which may result in Pulm, congestion and moderate interlobular edema, pleural effusion, cardiac necrosis, meningeal congestion
Monensin toxicity in cattle clinical signs
Heart and skeletal muscles degenerate, necrosis and mineralization- acute death with increased exercise/excitement/stress bc toxicity of the heart muscles
____ is ten times more toxic than lasolocid (used for feed efficacy)
Monensin
Toxicity of ionophores on necropsy:
Pulm, congestion and moderate interlobular edema, pleural effusion, cardiac necrosis, meningeal congestion
Diagnosis of Ionophore toxicity:
Cardiotrophin test to test heart enzyme levels (will be increased).
UPenn School test of serum to detect the monensin in the blood
What are the names of the ionophores used on cattle farms to increase feed? Which one is more potent???
Monensin (Rumensin), Bovatec (lasalcoid); Monensin/Rumensin is 10x more potent
