Ionic compounds Flashcards
1
Q
How is an ionic compound formed?
A
- Ions held together by strong electrostatic forces in a 3D lattice
- Each ion has an alternating charge so all ions are attracted to all of those around it
2
Q
Why do ionic compiunds have high MP and BP?
A
- Due to very strong electrostatic forces (ionic bonds) between oppositely charged ions
3
Q
Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten?
A
- When molten, ions are free to move and carry electric current
