Diamond & graphite Flashcards
1
Q
What is an allotrope?
A
- Different structural forms of the same element in the same physical state
2
Q
Explain the characteristics of diamond
A
- Forms a giant lattice with strong covalant bonds
- Very high MP and BP
- Doesn’t conduct electricity as no spare electrons or ions to carry charge
- Each carbon atom bonds to 4 other atoms (maximum)
3
Q
Explain the characteristics of graphite
A
- Forms a giant lattice with strong covalant bonds
- Forms layers of flat sheets. Each later is held together with weak intermolecular forces so can slide over eachother
- Soft and low MP/BP
- Can conduct heat and electricity as delocalised electrons to carry charge
- Each carbon atom bonds to 3 other atoms leaving 1 delocalised electron (carries charge)
