Cells & batteries Flashcards
1
Q
How is a cell made?
A
- Connecting two different electrodes (made from two different metals) and placing them in an electrolyte (a liquid through which charged ions can flow)
2
Q
What is a battery?
A
- 2 or more cells connected in series to provide a greataer voltage
3
Q
Factors that affect the voltage of a cell (3 factors)
A
- The greater the difference in reactivity of the two electrodes, the greater the voltage
- Type & concentration of electrode used
- Conditions, such as temperature
4
Q
Why are some cells rechargeable and some aren’t?
A
- Rechargeable cells:
- Chemical reactions are reversed when an external electrical current is supplied
- Non-rechargeable cells:
- Reactions stops when one of the reactants is used up
5
Q
What type of cell is an alkaline battery?
A
- Non-rechargeable
