Ionic Bonding [C] Flashcards
What are the ways atoms can be joined?
Metal + Non-Metal = Ionic Bonding
Non-Metals only = Covalent Bonding
Metal + Metal = Metallic Bonding
Ionic bonding is the electrostatic attraction between ________________________________________
Positive and negative ions
How are ionic compounds arranged?
Think of structure and ions
They have giant structures
Ions are arranged in a lattice
What are the names for positive and negative ions?
+ ions = Cations
- ions = Anions
What are some facts about cations?
Think about charges
Metal atoms lose electrons to become positive
Their charge depends on their group number (group 2, 2+ charge, group 3, 3+ charge)
Transition metals can have different charges
What are some facts about anions?
Think about polyatomic ions
Non metal atoms gain electrons
8 - group number = the charge of atom
Anions have polyatomic ions:
CO3(2-) = Carbonate
SO4(2-) = Sulphate
NO3(-) = Nitrate
OH(-) = Hydroxide
What is the attraction of atoms dependant on?
Size - Smaller ions have more attraction due to less distance
Charge - Larger differences in charges have more attraction
