Gram Staining/Antibiotics [B] Flashcards
How do antibiotics get rid of cells?
They target the cell wall and destroy it
What is the difference between Gram positive and Gram negative cells?
Antibiotics can destroy gram positive cells but can’t destroy gram negative
Gram positive cell only has a thick cell wall
Gram negative has a thin cell wall but a protective layer
Why can’t singular antibiotics destroy gram negative cells?
The protective layer prevents antibiotics from reaching the cell wall
What is the Gram Staining method used for?
To identify which cell is gram positive and which is gram negative
What are the steps to gram staining?
Get heat fixed cells, Apply crystal violet dye, Apply iodine solution, Wash with alcohol, Counter Stain with Safranin
What are the results for each cells after gram staining?
Gram positive cells will remain purple throughout the staining
Gram negative will lose the purple colour at alcohol washing and will be red/pink at the end
