Electron Affinity/Negativity [C] Flashcards
1
Q
What is electron affinity?
A
The change in energy when one mole of gaseous atom gains one mole of electron to form a negative ion.
(Indicates how strong the attraction is between an atom and electron)
2
Q
What is electronegativity? What does it depend on?
A
It’s a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons
Depends on:
- Number of protons
- Distance from nucleus
- How much shielding there is
3
Q
What is the difference between Affinity and Negativity?
A
Affinity - The strength of attraction to attract an electron
Negativity - The tendency to attract a bonding pair of electrons
4
Q
What can affect electron affinity?
A
- Proton Number
- Nuclear Charge
- Distance from Nucleus
- Shielding
