Ionic Bonding Flashcards
3 things involved in ionic bonding
Between metal and non metal
Forms giant ionic lattice
Involves transfer of electrons
What 4 things must be on an ionic bonding diagram
Brackets
Number of molecules
charges
dots and crosses
Whats holds two ions together in ionic bonding
Electrostatic attraction between positive and negative charges
what does 6:6 coordinated mean in an ionic lattice (NaCl)
to gain maximums stability, each Na ion must be surrounded by 6 Cl ions. IF THEY TOUCH, YOU INTRODUCE INTERRUPTIONS IN THE CRYSTAL, AND LIKE IONS START REPELLING
What are the 3 physical properties of NaCl,and explain them
High melting point- high electrostatic attraction between ions.
Conducts electricity when molten- ions are free to move
Brittle- when bent, like ions are forced next to each other, so they repel and it crumbles.
Why is Al203 stronger than NaCl?
Bigger difference in charge between Al3+ and O2- (5) than Na+ and Cl- (2)
