A

ionic bonding is the strongest attraction between oppositely charged ions

3
Q

factors that affect ionic bonding strength

A

Ionic charges: greater the charge on an ion, the stronger the ionic bond therefore higher melting/boiling point

ionic radius: smaller ions pack closer together. Electrostatic attractions get weaker with distance. So higher boiling and melting points

4
Q

why does ionic radius increase down a group

A

because atomic number increases so shielding increases

Q

explain what happens if same number of electrons but different protons

A

electrons are attracted to the nucleus more strongly pulling and decreasing ionic radius

Q

What are physical properties

A

High melting point obvious due to strong ionic attraction

soluble in polar solvent and can be pulled apart

don’t conduct when solid as no delocalised electrons

cant be shaped as repulsion is too strong so brittle
