Blood Clotting Flashcards
what is thrombosis
it prevents blood loss and prevents entry of micro-organisms and provides a framework for repair
process of thrombosis
- damaged blood vessels release thromboplastin and platelets attach to exposed collagen fibres
- Calcium ions and thromboplastin trigger conversion of prothrombin protein into enzyme thrombin
- Thrombin catalyses conversion of soluble protein fibrinogen to insoluble fibrin
- fibrin fibres mesh and tangle together trapping platelets and red blood cells
blood clot and atheromas
plaque deposit can rupture through the endothelium of the artery damaging the endothelium forming a rough surface. trigger thrombosis
blood clot reduces the blood flow and restricts movement of oxygen reducing respiration of surrounding cells.
can travel to different blood vessels and cause stroke or heart attack.
is blood clotting bad
it can completely block the artery
reduce the blood flow which restricts the movement of oxygen in blood reducing respiration
in the brain it can cause a stroke
what is atherosclerosis
hardening of arteries caused by damage to the endothelium of an artery due followed by inflammatory response
what is an inflammatory response
when white blood cells such as macrophages under the endothelium and forms fatty streaks
what does the atheroma cause
narrows the lumen reducing blood flow and raises blood pressure
how does genetics affect blood clotting
high blood pressure
how does age affect blood clotting
less elastic
how does diet affect blood clotting
increases cholesterol which forms plaque
how does gender affect blood clotting
oestrogen make arteries more elastic
how does high blood pressure affect blood clotting
damage endothelium
how does obesity affect blood clotting
how does high blood pressure affect blood clotting
how does physical inactivity affect blood clotting
how does high blood pressure affect blood clotting
how does smoking affect blood clotting
