Invertebrates Flashcards
Porifera (sponges)
live in fresh and marine water
lack true tissue and organs
Cnidarians
sessile (polyp) and motile (medusa) forms
simple- diploblastic and radial body plan
have GVC
4 classes of cnidarians include: cubazoa, hydrozoa, scyphozoa, staurozoa
lophotrochozoan
bilateral animals- triploblastic
Platyhelminthe (flatworm)
acelomates although have tripoblastic
fine branches of GVC and gas exchange through protonephridia
Class:
turbellarians: scavengers and predators in marine, reproduce sexually and asexually
monogeneans and termatodes: parasites in or on animals
cestoda: parasites of vertebrates and lack digestive system
Molluscs
most are marine
soft bodied animals protected by a hard shell
BODY PLAN:muscular foot, visceral mass and mantle( water filled)
Class:
Chitons: oval shaped, no head just foot for movement
Gastropods: freshwater/teresstrial and have single spiral shell. torsion( anus above mouth)
Bivalves: clams and oysters. 2 hard shells
Cephalopods: squid and octopus: beaklike jaw and tentacles …ammniotes(shelled) where common but went extinct.
Annelids
cephilization, complete gut, circulatory system and bilateral symmetry
Class:
oligochaetes: earthworms-eat through soil
leeches: hirudin
Polychaetes: parapodia made of chitin to aid locomotion
ecdysozoans
tough cuticle
cuticle molted
nematodes and arthropodes
Nematodes (roundworms)
cuticle shed when it grow
nutrients through body fluid via pseudocoelom
thrashing motion
Arthropods
- segmented body and hard exoskeleton
- joined appendages little variation from segment to segment covered by complete cuticle
- open circulatory system- hemolymph
Arthropods: Cheliceriforms
clawlike feeding appendages, ex: horseshoe crab and sea spider
arachnids: spiders– have book lungs(where gas exchange happenes)
Arthropods: Myriapods
jaw-like mandibles
milipedes and centipedes
Arthropods: Hexapoda
insects: flight exoskeleton tracheal system for gas exchange complete metamorphasis vs incomplete( associated with young)
Arthropods: crustaceans
2 branched appendages endopod: swimming exopod: gill Isopods: small DecapodsL large lobsters and crabs Copepods: planktonic
Choanocytes
Line GVC and capture food particles
Amoebytes
Channel the engulfed food and carry nutrients to cells
