Intussusception Flashcards
intussusception
part of the intestine invaginates into an adjoining segment of the intestine
who does it affect?
infants, but can affect adults
prevalence?
1-4 in 1000 births
common area?
ileocecal valve
narrower bowel moves into wider bowel (or vice versa)
buildup of pressure forces smaller bower to invaginate into the large bowel
what can cause an increase in pressure?
- tumors (causes inflmtn too)
- constipation
patho
invagination -> bowel obstruction -> inflmtn -> increased exudate, hyperemia -> edema
obstr = increased intralumenal pressure, pushes against wall and constricts vessels in bowel wall -> ischemia -> infarction
necrosis of tissue = perf in area of bowel, and bacteria can infect the necrotic tissue -> bacterial peritonitis
complx
- perforation
- peritonitis
- infarction
treatment
- hydrostatic reduction: water-soluble contrast medium that provides pressure to push back the invaginated area (air pressure + water pressure)
- Sx for complx
