- hard palate separates nasal and oral cavity (composed of the palatine and maxillary bones and skeletal muscle)
- do not have fusion of maxillary and nasal structures
- can be unilateral, bilateral, or at the mid-line

- a space or opening made by cleavage or a split
- can be a slight indentation or a deep fissure
when is the fetus most sensitive to cleft lip defect?
weeks 5-8 of gestation

- congenital and/or genetic
- strong link to smoking during pregnancy
- teratogens (smoking, folic acid def, viral infections)
folic acid role and what results from a defect?
role: responsible for DNA replication
defect = inadeq cellular division and affects formation of various structures such as the CNS

they are often combined
