Intubation "Rules" Flashcards
RODS
Difficulty in EGD insertion
R-restricted mouth opening
O-obstruction (of upper airway)
D-disruption/distortion-change to airway anatomy preventing adequate seal
S-stuff lungs/spine (cervical) - unable to properly position head for insertion
MOANS
Difficult BVM management
M- mask is difficult to seal O- obesity/obstruction A- aged over 55 - deceased compliance and muscle tone N- no teeth S- stiff lungs/chest wall
LEMONS
Difficulty laryngoscopy/intubation

Seven Ps of RSI
1) pre-oxygenate
2) pre-treat with meds to mitigate laryngospasm
3) paralysis
4) push the induction agent
5) protection/position
6) placement with proof
7) post-intubation management
SHORT mnemonic
In a can’t intubate/can’t ventilate scenario, this IDs the possibility of a difficult surgical cricothyrotomy.
S- surgery of the neck H- hematoma/infection O- obese R- radiation therapy (distorts anatomy) T- tumor (distorts anatomy)
