Intraosseous Access Flashcards
A GCS less than ____ may require IO access.
8
*GCS under 8 indicates the inability to protect one’s airway. These people may need life-saving medications through the IO to maintain an adequate GCS or LOC.
What is the contraindication for IO In patients with a GCS less than 8
Known diabetic with symptomatic hypoglycemia.
Shock from any cause with an SBP less than ____ is an indication for IO access.
A. 100 mmHg
B. 90 mmHg
C. 80 mmHg
D. 70 mmHg
C. 80 mmHg
Patients in ____ may require IO access.
Extremis (at risk for death/disability)
Some examples include: life threatening and symptomatic heart rhythm disturbances, respiratory arrest, status asthmaticus, anaphylaxis, etc.
What are the three approved sites for IO access?
Proximal tibia
Distal tibia
Proximal humerus
Dosage of lidocaine for infusion discomfort in the conscious/previous unconscious who became conscious patient.
30 mg slow IO push (over 30-60 seconds)
T/F: Pain medications may be administered through an IO?
False. Morphine and Fentanyl must be administered IV, IM, or IN, according to protocol.
*So…..if you have IV access, why would you drop an IO? I assume you should just use IM or IN access.
Perhaps fluid resuscitation in an individual in shock without IV access? Then you could just do IM/IN pain control.
What is the minimum number of unsuccessful IV attempts before IO access may be obtained?
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
B. 2
