Introduction to Abnormal Psychology Flashcards
##Chapter 1-- Introductions What are four characteristics of Psychological Disorders?
Phenomena that change the thoughts, feelings and behaviors of sufferers. They cause danger and harm for either the sufferer or those around them. They violate social norms and are prolonged experiences.
##Chapter 1-- Introductions What are four characteristics of Stigma?
Population receives a label.
That label refers to unwanted characteristics.
The population is seen as separate.
Discriminatory behaviors enforce this separation.
##Chapter 1-- Introductions What are Sigmund Freud's biggest contributions to modern psychology?
He was the Father of Psychotherapy. His Theory of Catharsis holds relatively true and his study of defense mechanisms led to research into how thoughts lead to behavior and illness.
##Chapter 1-- Introductions What is Stigma?
Negative attitudes and discriminatory behaviors towards those who are seen as different. The cause of Stigma is often poor understanding.
##Chapter 1-- Introductions What is the Genetic Paradigm?
The method of studying how human behaviour is formed by genetics. It has revealed that genetics can be activated or deactivated by circumstances. Therapists who understand heritability can more effectively create a diagnosis based on parents’ experiences.
##Chapter 1-- Introductions What is the Genotype and Phenotype?
The Genotype is our collection of genes. The Phenotype is the collection of genes we express.
##Chapter 1-- Introductions What is the Neuroscience Paradigm? What has it revealed?
The method of studying how human behaviour is created by neuroscience.
We can use dopamine and serotonin replacements to restore Mental Health. Poor mental health can arise from deficiency of a transmitter, slow or fast reuptake of said transmitter and faulty receptors.
##Chapter 1-- Introductions What is the Neuroendocrinal System?
This System creates homeostasis by regulating thirst, hunger, sleep and more. It creates stress by releasing cortisol to the HPA Axis (Hyptohalamo-Pituary-Arenal Glands)
#Chapter 1-- Introductions What is the Autonomic Nervous System?
The System that keeps our body matched to our environment. The Sympathetic component creates the flight or flight response and our Parasympathetic creates our rest and digest response. These systems control our heartrate, heat, digestion and more.
#Chapter 1-- Introductions What is the Cognitive Paradigm? What are its findings?
The method of studying human behaviour through understanding thoughts. It brought us Classical and Operant Conditioning alongside biases and schemas.
#Chapter 1-- Introductions What factors can influence Mental Health outside of the Paradigms we have covered?
Emotions Gender Culture Religion Employment Quality Relationships
