introduction content Flashcards
what is sensation?
the processes that detect external stimuli
what is perception?
the processes that interpret the meaning of the stimuli we detect
what is psychophysics?
the likelihood of detecting a stimulus increase as the signal intensity grows
what is the absolute threshold?
the minimum intensity of a physical stimulus that can be detected by an observer
what is subliminal perception?
perception at a signal level that is below the limen (threshld)
where is processing occuring?
involves the entire processing sequence
what are teller’s processing assumptions?
localise to the level where the response starts looking like a neural response
assume some level provides a stringent bottleneck
what is the motion aftereffect?
motion can be adapted to different directions at different locations at the same time
what does the motion aftereffect imply?
that there must be detectors processing small regions of space that are tuned selective for directions and detectors that combine responses to signal expanding motion
what does visual masking do?
used to control the durations stimuli can be processed by disrupting the availablity of the information
what is metacontrast?
the mask follows the target in time but surrounds it and doesnt overlap
what does examining changes with time allow?
dissociation of pathways with different speeds of signal transmission
