Macbeth, the title character, receives a prophecy that he will be king from a group of witches and plots and commits regicide in order to fulfil the prophecy and secure his place on the throne. His ambition, guilt and paranoia leads to further bloodshed, ultimately propelling him toward his downfall and death.
