Introduction Flashcards
Why do you think you are ready to be a deputy?
- I have got 5 years worth of experience in two manufacturing companies and 1 year of experience in design and programming engineer. So, I have experience in management and social skills.
- Also, I have got knowledge and experience through AEOCC course and consolidation time at squadron.
-During my SQN time, I’ve been able to observe what the deputies do and specifically the common skills across the board knowing that someday I will be in their shoes. This has highlighted areas I needed to work on if I wanted to be at that same calibre. During SQN time I made the deliberate choice throw myself into as many opportunities as and uncomfortable situation I could in hopes to get more experiences and work on some of my weaknesses.
- For instance, english is my second language. It takes a bit of time to process and deliver concise message. This can have an impact on my public speaking and I have seen the impact it has on people, people listen to a good public speaker. So in order to counter that, I have inserted myself into system presentation and being a secatory for safety meeting on behalf of MASO and I have been practising What, So what , Now what to deliver concise message.
-During my consolidation time, I have embedded within the flight line team and had a chance getting on sea-ride with flight 601 on HMAS Hobart. I appreciated how the flight team have to manage maintaining aircraft in a hot and humid environment, and the space they have got in the hangar.
- I found a mentor through the AE mentoring program for further personal and professional development.
- I joined leadership coach this has provided a great knowledge on building on my own leadership skills.
- I made sure I developed a good network amount all ranks and especially ensured a positive relationship with CPOs as I know I’ll definitely be leaning on their experience when I am a deputy.
- I understand I have much to learn and develop, which will obviously come with time. However, if I am a deputy tomorrow I will at least be able hit the ground running, I’ll be able to draw on my experiences, my peers, my network and the skills I’ve developed along the way.
I have got experience, knowledge, right personnel quality ( kind, analytical and geniune).
What jobs have you prepared to be a deputy?
Squadron time with maintainer, Journal tasks, task from deputy.
What do you bring to the table?
My strength is resilience that I am able to learn from the failures and move forward towards and never give up. Also, I am able to speak another language.
- Transactional leadership skills.
Why leadership is important for deputy?
A deputy in the SQN sits within a key cross road. A deputy works closely with Chiefs and POs and also interacts with the juniors much more regularly than the AEO. Additionally, the deputies work with the WO, AEO, OPSO and other external organisations.
Therefore, the deputy is in a key position to influence a large portion of the organisation. They can act as a conduit to promote commands message to the maintainers on the floor and influence command with the perspective generated from the floor.
What is the role of deputy?
- In general deputies are the problem solvers that oversee the technical and engineering activities of our organisation.
- Link between lower and higher management, work within the system and also outside the system to allow for an objective birds eye view to inform decision.
- As officers in the RAN the expectation is that we are leaders that look after the well-being of our subordinates
What do you bring in term of management to the table as DAEO?
Good time management skills and task prioritisation
Different perspective, contemporary, third eye perspective

- Maintenance test flight - scoping of tests flight and assessment
- Ground runs - scoping of ground runs and assessment
- Maintenance after captains acceptance - minor maintenance post-dispatch to operator
- Maintenance Procedure Modification - usual us to allow for scoping for efficiency purposes
- Lost tool procedure - the role in the process, performing an immediate RA on the impacts of the lost tool.
- Work routine - approval of duty/rest period increase/reductions
- Cannibalisation - approval of cannibalisation, considerations of wider impacts
- MIERs - approval of internal MIERs

Why do we have deputies as appose to CPO delegates?
- Being a degree qualified engineer and not having worked solely within the system we bring a different outlook and skill set:
- Systematic and analytical approach to problems
- Problem solving skills
- Critical thinking
- Unbiased
- From a workforce perspective, it takes a long time to get to CPO so hard to rely on CPOs getting through the system.
The combination of degree qualified engineers and years of experience complements each other and offers two different perspectives.
What is leadership for you? what is leadership? Management? Which one is more important?
Leadership is about positively influencing a large groups of people to get a job done ethically.
They are both important. But they perform different role and complement each other.
Management is about coping with complexity; it brings order and predictability to a situation. It is basically having a system to protect people to do their day-to-day job in a safe working environment.
Leadership on the other hand is about coping with rapid change.
How does this distinction play out?
* Management involves planning and budgeting. Leadership involves setting direction. * Management involves organizing and staffing. Leadership involves aligning people. * Management provides control activities and solves problems. Leadership provides motivation and inspiration.
What is your leadership style? and what are good leadership traits?
I am lean more towards to servant leadership style. Servant leader are constantly curious about selves, other people and environment.
What I can see from good leader traits are:
1.Decisive,
2.Communicator,
3.Approachable, (Safe relationship)
4.Open minded,
5. Listen without judgement, (Park the Ego)
6. Helpful, (Not doing things for people)
7.Be a coach and be coachable.
8. Spend time with people, (Gets to know people – Build relationship with people)
9. Empathy and
10. Sense of humor collaboratively.
You are a deputy posted in tomorrow and have a team under you how are going to lead?
- Being posted in, first thing would be getting to know my team, preferably in a divisional meet first
o Get an appreciation of their roles, team dynamics
o Pressures and how I can make their work life better
o What was done with the previous deputy, good and bad.
o Outline my background, experiences and expectations. - Then I would conduct individual interviews and get to know each individual, any outstanding divisional admin etc.
- With all the information I would have gathered, I would have a really good understanding of the team dynamics and what makes each individual tick. Hopefully use this to find ways to intrinsically motivate the team.
What is the difference between accountability and responsibility?
- Accountability - refers to state of being totally answerable for the outcome of a specific task.
o Obligations which cannot be delegated and retains all liability
o Requires authority to use resources - Responsibility - refers to being answerable for your own actions within your control.
o Can delegate the responsibility however is liable for the outcome.
What is your strength and weakness?
My strength is resilience that I am able to learn from the failures and move forward and never give up. Also, I am able to speak another language.
My weakness is that English is my second language so it may take a bit of time to process and provide concise answer. But, I have been practising on using What, So what and Now what.
Also, confrontation.

When I graduated, I work as a design and programming engineer where I have to design and provide programming codes using 3D solidworks and 2D Amada programming softwares to manufacture an electrical switch board. It was trilled to see how my design become alive. In that company I learnt to develop management skills and interpersonnel skills.
Then, I worked as production leader at two different manufacturing company where it made baby-wipes and insulation for house building. During that period, I have managed 15 people in a team, involved in training, recruitment and provide problem solving. I joined mentoring program and leadership coaching during my consolidation time at squadron. My mentor has been a great resource in term of learning new things and improving my skills. And my leadership coach has provided a great knowledge on building on my own leadership.
Outside of Defence, I love going for swimming which helps me mentally and physically to wine down, play some sports with sailors and and mediate for 30mins daily. I also help raise funds and organising for Burmese charity community by cooking and selling foods to help rafugee.
