Monotheism
the belief in one (mono) God (Theism). This God is typically single, supreme, all powerful, all knowing, transcends time and is perfect. God is personal and communicates with humanity through miracles, covenants, and revelations. E.g. Christianity, Islam, Judaism
Polytheism
Belief in many (poly) gods (theist). Each God has a role, purpose, function, name, personality and feast day. Polytheist gods are impersonal and do not get involved with our lives. They are usually represented through images such as statues and paintings. E.g. Hinduism, Ancient Greece/Rome/Egypt
Monism
Belief that god is an invisible force/Everywhere
Paganism
Belief that god is an object E.g. Ancient religions, Romans, Greeks, Celts.
animism
belief that spirits exist in nature. E.g. Shintoism, Aboriginal.
Name the elements of religion in connection to various world religions
- Idea of God: Belief in a superior god that created everything
- Idea of Soul: An important spiritual substance that separates from the body at death. Everlasting
- Sacred Scriptures: Books that contain hymns, poems, stories, lessons, rules, prayers, etc. express faith.
- Ethics, beliefs, and religious practices: Worship, shared celebrations, and rituals. Rules on how to live one’s life.
- Important people: Great leaders who help shape the religion.
