Intro to WBC Flashcards
Absolute Neurtrophil Count
ANC= WBC x (%PMN + %bands)
leukocytosis
total WBC elevated above normal range
band news
immature neutrophil
patterns of leukocytosis/neutrophilia
shift neutrophila left shift leukemoid rxn leukoerythroblastic rxn leukemia
shift neutrophilia
demargination of marginal pool w/o proliferation
moderate in degree, rapid onset
shift neutrophilia generally seen with
steroids
epi injection
stress
seizures
left shift
more bands and occasional metamyelocyte in periphery
leukemoid rxn
demargination and marrow proliferation
–increase in both mature and immature forms–>
involves a left shift
leukemoid rxn seen w/
infection, inflammation, metastatic cancer, G-CSF
leukoerythroblastic rxn
seen w/ damaged bone marrow causing premature release of precursors cells
you may see this cell in a leukoerythroblastic rxn
tear drop cells
neutropenia
an absolute PMN count below normal range 2200-7000 cells/ul
congenital causes of neutropenia
cyclic neutropenia (autosomal dominant) severe congenital neutropenia (auto dom) kostmann syndrome (auto recessve)
acquired causes of neutropenia
infection drug/toxin nutritional deficiencies neoplasm hypersplenism/splenomegaly immune-induced
ANC no significant risk for infection
