ABO compatibility Flashcards
ABO type is determined by
2 codom genes that encode glycosyltranserase enzymes
type O occurs when a person
lacks functional enzymes; typically occurs in frameshift/nonsense mutation
ABO compatibility is based on
red blood cell antigens
plasma antibodies
ABO antibodies are mostly
IgM
transfusions of incompatible cells result in
intravascular hemolysis
what can you give to anyone without rocking the boat
AB plasma
O blood
universal donor
O blood
universal receiver
AB
type O can get what plasma
O, AB, A, B
Type A can get what plasma
AB, A
forward typing tells us
patients red cells- mix with reagent antibodies- react w/ anti- a, means a blood
reverse typing tells us
patient’s plasma
reagent red cell (A,B,O)–reacts with A– must be B or O
immediate spin cross matching is the
final check for ABO compatibility– hope to NOT see agglutination
