Intro to tooth morphology Flashcards
Name structures A-E
A = apex
B= root
C = cervical line / cementum enamel junction (CEJ)
D = crown
E = incisal edge

What is the anatomical crown vs clinical crown?
anatomical crown - technically where the crown is
clinical crown is what you can see upon examination (it may be smaller or larger than the anatomical crown)
What is labial surface?
Anterior teeth: Labial surface (the surface towards the lips)
What is a buccal surface?
Posterior teeth: Buccal surface (the surface facing the cheeks)
What is palatal?
Towards or adjacent to the palate (maxillary teeth)
What is lingual?
Towards or adjacent to the tongue (mandibular teeth)
What is a proximal surface?
The area between adjacent tooth surfaces is called interproximal space
What are the 2 types of proximal surfaces?
mesial - towards midline
distal - away from midline
What 2 teeth don’t have a mesial surface?
the 1s
Describe the mesial surface?
Mesial points towards the midline.
Describe the distal surface
Distal points away from the midline.
What are the 2 biting surfaces of teeth?
incisal or occlusal
Describe incisal surfaces
the surfaces of the incisors or canines that contact with the opposing jaw.
Describe the occlusal surfaces
surfaces of the premolars or molars that contact with the opposing jaw.
Describe the 3 sections of a root
