Describe asthma pathology
What are the symptoms of asthma?
Wheezing, chest tightness, SOB, coughing
How do you test for asthma?
- history
- FEV1/FVC
- Response to bronchodilators

Manage symptoms
How would you diagnose asthma?
What is the normal FEV1/FVC?
Adults: 75-80%
Children: 90%
What are you looking for in a patient for asthmatic FEV1/FVC?
Adult and children: 12% increase or 200mL, after albuterol in the morning
How do we control asthma?
- assess symptom control over 4 weeks
- identify risk factors
- measure lung function before treatment, 3-6 months later, then periodically
What are the doses of advair?

What are the treatment issues of asthma assessment?
- Physically able to take meds
- Observe patient technique
- Check for written action plan
What are the questions to ask for asthma control?
- Daytime symptoms more than twice/week
- Any night waking due to asthma
- Reliever needed for symptoms more than twice/week
- Any activity limitation due to asthma
What are the drugs used for asthma?
- ICS
- ICS/LABA
- LTRAs
- SABA
- Anticholinergics
- OCS
- Anti IgE
- Anti IL5
- Theophylline
What are the symptoms of COPD?
Same as asthma, but more lung infections, colored phlegm, weight loss, and cyanosis
How do you test for COPD?
- Spirometry
- X rays
- CT scans
- Brocnhial challenges
- Family hsitory
- Risk factors
