Intro to organic Flashcards
What is the general formula for alkanes ?
CnH2n+2
What is the general formula for alkenes ?
CnH2n
What is the general formula for cycloalkanes ?
CnH2n
What takes priority when naming a molecule, double bond or methyl group ?
Double bond
What is the functional group for alcohols ?
OH
What is the functional group for alkenes ?
Double bond
What is a haloalkane ?
Alkane with one or more halogens bonded to it.
Name the three types of structural isomerism.
Chain isomerism
Positional isomerism
Functional group isomerism
What is the definition for structural isomerism ?
Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
What is chain isomerism and give an example of it.
Where the length of the main carbon chain changes length.
2-methyl butane —> Pentane
What is positional isomerism and give a example of it.
Where the position of a functional group moves.
but-1-ene —> But-2-ene
2-methyl pentane —> 3-methyl pentane
What is functional group isomerism and give an example of it.
Where the functional group has changed.
Butene —> Cyclo butane
What is the definition of stereoisomerism ?
Stereo isomers have the same structural formula and molecular formula but different arrangement of particles in space.
What is E/Z isomerism and give a example of it.
Where a molecule cannot rotate due to a double bond so there is isomers where the groups on each side of the double bond swap around.
But-2-ene has E/Z isomers
Both H’s at top is the Z isomer
H’s on opposite sides is the E isomer
