Intro to module Flashcards
What are 4 types of brain stimulation?
- Deep brain stimulaiton.
- Transcranial magnetic stimulaiton.
- Transcranial direct current stimulation.
- Optogenetics.
What does an fMRI scan signal assume?
A stronger signal reflects greater demand for oxygenated blood & therefore, greater activity occurring in the more oxygen rich region.
What does an fMRI show the difference of?
Between oxygenated & deoxygenated blood due to the difference in their magnetic properties (deoxygenated blood has lower signal).
What does fMRI measure?
the oxygen in the blood.
What is brain imaging?
Looking at pictures of the brain seperated into structural (size and shape etc) & functional (activity).
What is neuropsychology?
Looks at effect of brain damage or function.
By seeing what is affected, we can infer function of damaged area.
Investigates what damaged brain cells can tell us about building blocks of cognition & how they interact.
Uses case studies & looks @ brain damage compared to healthy or double dissociations.
What methods are used to try and understand the brain?
Neuropsychology, Brain imaging & Brain stimulation.
