Intro to Immunology Flashcards
What are the five roles of the immune system?
Kill/control pathogens, control disease, repair tissue, organ development, maintain organ integrity/function
What are three direct mechanisms of tissue damage by pathogens?
Exotoxins, endotoxins, and direct cytopathic effects
What are three indirect mechanisms of tissue damage by pathogens?
immune complexes, anti-host antibody, and cell-mediated immunity
Name 4 challenges presented when trying to fight pathogens?
form diversity; life cycle diversity; diverse routes of infection; dealing with multiple attacks across a broad domain
List four characteristics of the innate immune system.
responds within hours, fixed response, limited number of specificities, and is constant during the response
List four characteristics of the adaptive immune system.
Responds within days to weeks, has variable responses, highly selective specificities, more responses will elicit bigger responses
