Intro to Anatomy (day one of the shits) Flashcards
What is each cell surrounded by and why is it necessary? (2)
- External or plasma membrane
2. Allows needed substances in while preventing the entry of potentially dangerous substances
What system is the body enclosed by?
Integumentary system → skin
Define: responsiveness
Ability to sense changes (stimuli) in the environment and react to them
How do nerve cells communicate with each other and other parts of the body? (1)
Via electrical impulses
Define: digestion
Process of breaking down ingested food into simple molecules that can be absorbed into the blood
What system distributes blood throughout the body?
Cardiovascular
Define: metabolism
All chemical reactions that occur within the body cells
What system regulates metabolism?
Endocrine system
What does the endocrine system do and how? (2)
Regulate and control the body by secreting hormones using glands
Define: excretion
Removal of wastes from the body
What is the constant reproduction from a cellular level?
Cells dividing and producing daughter cells
Why must cells continuously divide?
Must provide new cells for growth and repair
What % of the air we breathe is oxygen?
20% oxygen
Can we use nutrients if oxygen is unavailable?
Nope
What % of our body weight is water?
60-80%
