Intro - Science & Professional Practice Flashcards
Define science and it’s 4 general guidelines
A process/method of learning that is SYSTEMATIC (Standardizing conditions), CONTROLLED (variables), EMPERICAL (observation based), CRITICAL (rigorous evaluation)
What is a Theory and their importance
- A set of interrelated facts that present a systematic view of phenomenon & describe, explain and predict it,
- Allows organization of a large numbers of facts in a pattern that helps others understand them
Limitations of a study
Can’t determine causal relationships because a variable has not been manipulated unlike in a Experiement
Professional practice knowledge - Definition, Pros, Cons
Knowledge gained through experience
Pros - Holistic, Innovative, Immediate/Concurrent
Cons - Less reliable, Unexplained, Potential bias
Scientifically derived knowledge - Pros, Cons
Pros - Reliable, Systematic & Controlled, Unbiased
Cons - Reductionistic (focus on 1 variable), Slow too evolve, Lack of focus on external validity (practicality)
Integrating PPK & SDK - Knowledge transfer through the RE-AIM Model
Reach - who is affected what too what degree
Efficacy - Positives & negatives of the program (Research)
Adoption - Who will use the program
Implementation - Is the program delivered as specified
Maintenance - sustaining the program over time
Psychophysiological Orientation
Examine physiological processes of the brain & their influence on activity
Social-Psychological Orientation
Examine how behaviour is determined by the interaction of the social environment and personality
Cognitive-Behavioural Orientation
Examine the link between athletes cognitive thoughts & their behaviour
6 Ethical principles in S&EP
Competence - Must maintain high standards and recognise limits of expertise
Integrity - Clarify their role & don’t falsely advertise
Professional Responsibility - Clients interests first
Respect - Respect fundamental rights
Concern welfare - welfare > winning
Social Responsibility - contribute to knowledge & welfare
Difference between Science & Art of coaching
Science - Focus on general principles
Art - Recognising when & how to individualise the general principles
