What does a competent HCA generally do?
Recognizes consumer differences, gives exceptional client directed care, promotes and protects clients rights, ensures clients safety from abuse and neglect via mandatory reporting, open communication, and effective problem solving.
Competent HCA objectives
Identify why the HCA is crucial to the client. Recognize your role in client directed care. Identify cultural and religious preferences and be sensitive. Protect and support clients rights and legality as defined by federal and state laws.
Remaining competent HCA objectives
Protect and promote the client’s right to live free of abuse, neglect, abandonment, and financial exploitation. To identify signs of mistreatment and report appropriately. Know your responsibilities as a mandatory reporter.
Competent HCA- key terms:
Bias
Bias is an opinion that influences your judgment (ie if you are liberal or conservative)
What are biases shaped by?
Opinions, beliefs, viewpoints, and values.
Exploitation:
To take advantage of others or a situation for personal gain
Grievance
A formal complaint, usually issued by the client about the quality (or lack-thereof) of your work
Mandatory Reporter
A person required by law to report any suspected abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, or abandonment.
Ombudsman
A person who advocates for the rights of clients in long term care (ie someone on federal disability)
Privacy
To screen from view when assisting with personal care and keep clients personal matters confidential
