What is Self Neglect?
Self-neglect occurs when vulnerable adults refuse or are unable to provide goods and services for their physical and mental health, well-being, and safety. Possible signs include lack of food and water, unsafe living conditions, poor self care, or poor medical care.
It is not mandatory
to report self neglect in washington stater, but HCAs should stay alert to signs of self neglect and report them to the supervisor or case manager
What is the role of the HCA?
The role of the HCA is to assist consumers to maintain their safety, independence, and dignity
What are the rights the HCA has?
The HCA has the right to be free of abuse, to be respected, work in a safe environment, and to say “no” if the client is asking the HCA to do something unsafe or not in the care plan.
What are the HCAs four basic job responsibilities?
To provide personal care, perform the role as a member of the care team, follow a high standard of professional conduct, and respond to day-to-day situations and emergencies.
What is very important for the HCA to remember?
To set clear, professional boundaries and maintain them. Without these boundaries:
The client may not receive the correct services. The consumer may feel ignored. The HCA may act in dishonest ways. The consumer or the HCA may be taken advantage of.
What are consumer restraints?
A restraint is a device or action that limits or restricts movement of a client against their will
What rights do consumer have in regards to restraints?
Consumers have the right to maintain a restraint-free environment, including freedom from physical, chemical. and environmental restraints.
What is the care team?
The care team includes everyone who provides care for a consumer, including professionals, relatives, and the client.
What is an HCA’s role as a member of the care team?
Your role as a member of the care team is to observe changes in the client’s baseline and report these changes to the appropriate care team member.
What is the care plan?
The care plan is a written document that outlines everything the care team is to do to support the client and identifies the consumer’s baseline.
What are some more important features of the client’s care plan?
The care plan outlines the HCAs and care team’s responsibilities, contact information for care team members, the client’s needs, strengths, limitations, and preferences- and instructions for important tasks.
