What is the definition of social order?
General conformity to the shared norms and values, so society is peaceful and predictable.
What is the definition of social control?
The process where people are persuaded to obey the rules and conform. Agencies of social control are institutes which work to ensure conformity.
What is formal social control?
Carried out by the government, armed forces and Criminal Justice System, including the police, the courts and the prison service.
What is informal social control?
Carried out by agents such as education system, family, peer groups, media and religion. We are less aware of informal social control, but it is arguably more important/effective.
What is meant by the idea of crime and deviance being socially constructed?
They are created by society.
What is meant by the idea of crime and deviance being relative?
They will vary according to time, society and circumstance.
What would feminists say about social order?
Social order enforces the means of the patriarchy.
What would marxists say about social order?
Social order is the enforcement of norms and values of the ruling class.
Which sociologists would be in favour of social order? Why?
Functionalists.
Maintains the value consensus.
