Becker - deviance is…
Socially constructed.
Becker - continuation of labelling.
A ‘master status’, deviant identity will control the individual.
Becker - deviant career.
May start if someone joins a deviant subculture or group. This group may justify deviance.
Becker - deviant identity.
A person starts to see themselves as deviant and this identity becomes a controlling one.
Plummer - homosexual.
This homosexual label becomes a ‘master status’ and the individual may internalise the label and pursue the ‘homosexual career’.
Malinowski - location of research.
Trobriand Islands in the South Pacific.
Malinowski - incest.
Incest between cousins was seen as deviant but was quite common.
Malinowski - study.
Caused uproar and the man eventually committed suicide because of the shame.
Becker - Malinowski.
Only when a public accusation was made that the behaviour became serious.
Lemert.
Society’s reaction to behaviour is more significant than the behaviour itself.
Lemert - primary deviance.
Refers to acts which are not publicly labelled and seen as acceptable.
Lemert - secondary deviance.
Someone consciously engages in deviant behaviour as an expression of their deviants self-concept.
Matza - youth obligations.
Moral obligation to the law, but also pressure to pursue ‘subterranean values’.
Matza - five neutralisation.
- Denial of responsibility.
- Denial of injury.
- Denial of the victim.
- Condemnation of the condemn.
- Appeal to higher loyalties.
Young - research subjects.
Alienated youth involved in drug taking.
