What is development aid?
financial aid given to developing countries to support development by governments, IGOs and NGOs
What are trade embargos?
government or international ban that restricts trade with a country
What is military aid?
money, weapons, equipment or expertise given to a country to protect borders, fight terrorism or combat crime

$100 million denied and $195 million withheld
Why did the USA cut aid to Egypt?
made conditional on improvements to democracy and human rights
What can the political elite do with development aid?
Use it to buy elections, build military and enrich themselves

Somalia is the most corrupt country on the corruption index and yet still recieves £128 million in development aid per year

Example of accessing resources as a motiviation for giving aid?
China had funded developement in sub saharan Africa eg. Tazara rail link between Zambia and Tanzanian for copper mining
Two examples of when aid was given for political support?
- India wants permanent UN seat so targets FDI at countries which may support them
- Germany also wants UN seat and has sought support from countries such as Kenya, Angola and Nigeria (develop HEP plants in Nigeria)
example of when developing military alliances was a motivation for giving aid
Jordan recieves $750 million for military support against IS. Jordan carries out air strikes, allows use of its military bases by overseas forces and shares intelligence
