a listening style - strong desire to evaluate messages.
i.e. assessing quality, accuracy and consistency
Evaluating
a response that appraises the sender’s thoughts or behaviors in some way
i.e.
that’s a good idea
you’re on the right track now
An attitude like that won’t get you anywhere
Hearing
the process in which sound waves strike the eardrum and cause vibration that are transmitted to the brain.
Listening
the process of receiving and responding to others’ messages
Listening fidelity
the degree of congruence between what a listener understands and what the message sender was attempting to communicate
Mindful Listening
Involves giving careful and thoughtful attention and responses to the messages we receive
Mindless Listening
Occurs when we react to others’ messages automatically and routinely, without much mental investment.

allow a variety of extended responses

Paraphrasing
providing feedback that restates, in your own words, the message you thought the speaker sent
Questioning
asking for additional information
Relational listening
a listening style - most concerned with building emotional closeness with others.
Remembering
the ability to recall information once we’ve understood it
Responding
giving observable feedback
Silent listening
allows you to stay attentive and non verbally responsive without offering any verbal feedback
Sincere questions
aimed at understanding others
Supporting
responses reveal the listener’s solidarity with the speaker’s situation
i.e.
expressions of care, concern, affection, and interest, especially during times of stress or upset
Task-oriented listening
a listening style - most concerned with efficiency and accomplishing the job at hand
Understanding
attaching meaning to a message
Analyzing
the listener offers an interpretation of a speakers message
i.e.
she is doing it because…
i think whats really bothering you is…
