Intimate distance
the first of Hall’s spatial zones - begins with skin contact and rages out to about 18 inches. used with people who are emotionally close to us - making love, caressing, comforting, protecting.
Kinesics
term used to describe the study of how people communicate through bodily movement
Monochronic
emphasizing punctuality, schedules, and completing one task at a time
Nonverbal communication
messages expressed by non-linguistic means
Oculesics
the study of how the eyes can communicate
Paralanguage
term used to describe the way a message is spoken
i.e.
not what you say, but how you say it

the second of Hall’s spatial zones - ranges from 18 inches to 4 feet. Place where couples stand in public. Strangers standing this close pose a threat.
Personal Space
a sort of invisible bubble - we think of this area inside the bubble as our own - almost as much a part of us as our own bodies
Polychronic
flexible schedules in which multiple tasks are pursued at the same time
Proxemics
the study of how communication is affected by the use, organization, and perception of space and distance
Public distance
furthest zone in Hall’s spatial zones - 12 feet and on. the closes range is what most teachers use in classrooms.
