Q

A

As Marshall MacLuhan explained in Understanding Media (1964), the medium is the message – each medium shapes the form of the message and the way it is perceived, so the medium itself prevails over the content of the message, as it causes structural changes in people’s minds and the society. The cinema thus introduced a new perception of the world based on the linear succession of sequences.
If one tries to apply McLuhan’s theory to today’s technologies, one can argue that the internet (social networks) has fostered interactivity and so encouraged people to take a more active part in the political, social, economic debates – hence the new notion of participative democracy.
