Teachers judged pupils according to how closely they fitted the image of the 'ideal pupil' - middle class closer to the ideal
Dunne + Gazeley (2008) - secondary expectations
Teachers ‘normalised’ w/c underachievement; unconcerned by it and made little effort to help. opposite reaction to m/c underachievers
Rists (1970) - primary labelling
placing different pupils on different tables around the classroom depending on their appearance and ability
Self fulfilling prophecy
when a label is given and the prediction comes true simply by virtue of it being made
