Intelligence Flashcards
Intelligence def
capacity to acquire knowledge, think abstractely and rationally, act purposefully, or adapt to changes in the environment
Charles Spearman Theory
Used mathematical approach/ “g” factor is similar to an IQ/General factor + specific factor
Louis Leon Thurstone
different factors (comprhension, word fluency, number facility, spatial visualization, associative memory, perceptual speed, inducting/reasoning)
Raymond Cattell
two components (crystalized intelligence, knowing facts, fluid intelligence, knowing how to do smthg)
Robert Stenberg’s theory
Three types : practical ( street smart and common sense), creative(imaginative and innovative problem-solving) and analytical (academic problem solving and computation)
Howard Gardner
8 intelligences (Linguistic, Logical-mathematical, Musical, Bodily kinesthetic, Spatial, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Naturalist)
Emotional intelligence
the ability to understand the emotions of yourself and others, show empathy, understand social relationships and cues, and regulate your own emotions and respond in culturally appropriate ways
average of IQ score
100 (82% of the population has a score btwn 85 and 115)
The Stanford binet intelligence scale
Standardization and norming ensure that new scores are reliable
Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale
variety of verbal and nonverbal skills.
One of the most extensively used intelligence tests. 1) verbal comprehension, 2) visual spatial, 3) fluid reasoning, 4) working memory and 5) processing speed.
Flynn effect
The observation that each generation has a significantly higher IQ than the last.
cultural biases in IQ tests
different culture may employ different problem-solving strategies
Solution to the cultural biases
“culture-fair” intelligence tests : To minimize the importance of skills and knowledge that may be more common in certain groups rather than in others
Creativity def
the ability to generate, create, or discover new ideas, solutions, and possibilities.
Divergent thinking
Used when more than one possibility exists on a situation.
Convergent thinking
ability to provide a correct or well-established answer or solution to a problem.
Learning disabilities
neurological impairements/ affect children with average to above-average intelligence/ exhibit comorbidity with other disorders
dysgraphia
resulting in a struggle to write legibly/ difficulty putting their thoughts down on paper
dyslexia
inability to correctly process letters/ miw up letters within words and setences
dyscalculia
a math learning disability resulting in an inability to learn number related concepts, perform accurate math calculations, reason and problem-solve, and perform other basic math skills
